Samsung to unveil the biggest LCD screenMonday, August 21, 2006 Samsung announced that this week will show at the IMID 2006 in South Korea the biggest LCD screen ever produced: a high definition LCD with a screen diagonal of 70 inches (1.78 meters). The model presented at the meeting will only be a prototype though because its technology will be available for use on TVs only starting from the first half of 2007. The South Korean company’s panel is 5 inches wider than the current largest high-definition LCD (Sharp’s Aquos LC65GD1E). In addition to having the biggest LCD screen it also comes with considerable features: - support of the 1080p resolution - a 180 degrees conical viewing angle - contrast ratio of 2000:1 - brightness of 600nits - a response time of 8ms - a 120 Hz refresh rate. The latter features almost double the rate of the biggest LCD screen available right now (65 Hz) and, couple with the HD, will guarantee a great image quality. Considering that early this year CMO announced a 56-inch LCD with a maximum resolution of 3,840×2,160 we are a bit surprised that the Samsung display doesn’t support a higher resolution. Probably it depends on the different uses of the displays that the two Asian companies predicted: CMO targets medical video display and satellite pictures while Samsung has the consumer market in mind. Being this early the price has yet to be announced by the world's largest TFT-LCD supplier but all these features will certainly be quite high. The 65-inches display by Sharp will cost around 18000 dollars so the Samsung LCD, barring surprises, will sell for more that 20000 dollars. It’s a high price but what about the satisfaction to have the biggest LCD ever produced in your living room? Powered by dBLOGGER |
