LCD, plasma, and HDTV televisions - how to get the most from your flat panel TV

Arasor announces Laser HDTV prototype

Friday, October 13, 2006

Arasor International, an Australian company, has announced the prototype of a television that will defeat both plasma and LCD in the competitive display market. It is a laser television that according to Arasor and its U.S. partner Novalux is the first of its kind in the world.

Exact details about how the HDTV laser television works are not available at this moment but its advantages, if confirmed, are astonishing. With their technology the two companies claim to be able to offer a better picture while consuming significantly less.

Precisely they say that with a laser television it will be possible to represent double the color gamut of the current displays -- from 40 percent to 90.

The laser HDTV will cost half the price of current plasma and LCD flat panel displays, and will consume only a quarter of power. The latter point is especially important one because present TV displays are very power hungry.

Arasor said that they are well positioned to start high-volume production of the circuitry necessary for the HDTV laser television. The technology will not be limited only to televisions, but it is being tried also on mobile phones to use the device as a projector (for images and streaming media).

They also said that the HDTV laser televisions will become widely available by December 2007. The announcement does not contain information about the possible manufacturers that will implement the technology but one of them should be Mitsubishi.

So if you have been considering finally trading in the old tubed television set for a large flat panel display, you may want to hold of for a while longer -- If not to take advantage of the great new technology, at least the prices of current LCD and plasma technology should drop dramatically.
